Interpreting

Interpreting is an oral form of transferring a text or oral expression from one language to another.

There are two types of interpreting:

  • Simultaneous Interpreting

It is a real-time interpretation when the interpreter interprets the speaker’s speech at the same time, with a few seconds of delay. This interpretation is used at various conferences, seminars, debates, lectures, etc.

Simultaneous interpretation requires an equipment, i.e. a booth with a console and headphones, when the interpreter sits in the booth, listens to the speaker through the headphones, and speaks to the microphone that stands in front of him/her on the desk as part of the console. Other attendees also have their consoles with headphones where they can switch channels by language.

There is also another form of simultaneous interpretation that does not require any technical equipment, so-called whispering (chuchotage), when the interpreter sits next to the client and whispers the speaker´s discourse into the client´s ear. This form is used for statesmanlike events, or for business meetings where there are more participants and where it is not possible to provide interpreting equipment.

  • Consecutive Interpreting

This is an interpretation where the interpreter interprets the speaker’s speech in parts or at the end of the speech, helping with taking notes. Such interpreting is used for interpreting in production operation, accompanying groups, lectures, negotiations, press conferences, audits, excursions, social events such as reception, opening, wine tasting, etc.

In consecutive interpreting, the time will necessarily extend.

The unit of interpretation, both simultaneous and consecutive, is an interpreted hour.

As the events last more than an hour, the rate is usually charged for a half day (up to 4 hours) or for a full day (up to 8 hours).

I am also available for multi-day interpreting abroad. I am currently translating only in English.
